Teachers can use Time for Kids Magazine as a classroom resource to teach current events, classroom mini-lessons and real world reading and writing skills.

Time for Kids Magazine is a well written, very useful teacher resource that can be used weekly in classroom lessons. Each weekly issue covers a wide range of topics, and there are three grade-level specific editions

TFK and Current Events

Time Magazine and its offspring, Time for Kids Magazine, excel in presenting a weekly review of current events, in a very approachable, readable way. The magazine for children is written with grade-level readability in mind. Events covered in a recent issue include articles on the winner of the recent Scripps Spelling Bee, Anamika Veeramani; a report on the season's first tropical storm which hit central America, and the popular TFK's summer movie guide.

Other timely topics in recent issues of Time for Kids Magazine include the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Top 5 Kids Movies of 2010, and articles relating to Teacher Appreciation Week.

Time for Kids Magazine's Website

The TFK website has many great features that work along with the children's magazine. There is a link to the latest news stories, a homework helper link and news-related games.

The homework helper section offers help by school subject and allows students to access excellent resources such as ways to write great reports, help with foreign languages, spelling and grammar links, and many other useful links. There is also a separate section designed specifically to give help with many kinds of writing. A writer's toolbox can be found as well as links to writing letters, reports, essays, fiction and poetry.

Teacher Resources for Using TKF in the Classroom

The Time Magazine for Kids site also has a separate section just for teachers. Besides being able to use all of the subject-related resources found in other parts of the site, the teacher section also has a variety of grade-level specific free worksheets arranged both by theme and by skill. These are easily downloaded and are printable for the class.

A section on graphic organizers includes diagrams, maps, graphs and other organizers designed for grades K-1, 2-3, or 4-6. In addition, there are quizzes for each issue that can be used to supplement classroom instruction.

A Time for Kids Magazine subscription can be purchased with a volume discount for school-wide use, or individual subscriptions can be purchased. Class subscriptions include a free teacher's guide with each issue and a Time for Kids Map & Graph Skills Booklet.

Time for Kids Magazine, published 26 times a year, is a great magazine for children and an excellent way to bring real-life lessons into the classroom. It is an excellent way to expose students to current events and timely topics. The website and teacher resources add another dimension to the educational value of this great resource.
